Before my friend Fran passed away, I asked her what I could do for her. She asked me to photograph her garden. It was winter.

Final passage

She has hesitated at the door for more than a hundred years. For centuries to come, the same question will be asked about the look on her face. Is it despondency for her final passage? Or is this the sorrow of her last look at life.

When my daughter was a child, we sometimes visited beautiful Wave Hill for family art day. On one walk through its wild wooded outer grounds, we found this stone in the ground. Over the years, I have returned to look for this stone, to find it still there – and to see, in fact, it is always different.
